myIT Tip of the Week

With summer quickly coming to an end, and classes resuming very soon, we wanted to take a moment to talk about some of the services we have to offer.

o   Employees as well as current students have access to download Microsoft Office 2016

o   Free anti-virus software is also available to students and employees for their personal devices

o   Beginning August 20, the Help Desk will be open until 9:00 pm Sunday through Thursday, and Saturdays 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Fridays we are open 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

o   We are available by phone, email, and live chat

o   Students and staff get 1TB of cloud storage with OneDrive

o   Free WiFi is available all over campus, including many outdoor spaces like Welch Stadium and Trusler Sports Complex.

o   Employee training opportunities will be available this fall on various topics

Public Wi-Fi - Protect Before You Connect!

According to a BBC article from December 2017, "Starbucks has acknowledged that visitors to one if its branches were unwittingly recruited into a crypto-currency mining operation." Hackers compromised customers' computers and used them to create digital cash. This incident is only one of many to highlight the risk of using public Wi-Fi.

Public Wi-Fi is convenient and great to use, especially when you travel. However, connecting to public Wi-Fi comes with its own risks, especially when transmitting sensitive data. As in the example above, attackers can set up fake Wi-Fi access points or compromise legitimate ones to steal your information. While there is no reason to avoid public Wi-Fi entirely, here are some things to be conscious of.

1. Before connecting to public Wi-Fi, makes sure all systems, browsers and apps are up-to-date. Updated software is much harder to compromise.
   
2. Be aware of what you are sharing while using public Wi-Fi. For sensitive data, such as bank transactions, use tethering off your smartphone whenever possible.
   
3. If available, use encryption for everything you do online and browse secure websites (look for https).
   

Hornet Nation Wireless expands to Butcher and Earl Center

The Butcher Education Center and Earl Center were both added to the list of buildings on campus with the new Hornet Nation wireless.

Hornet Nation expands in March!

This past March, the Hornet Nation wireless landed in new spaces on campus including:

• Student Rec Center
• HPER Building
• Police & Safety
• Power Plant
• Stormont Maintenance

Beach Hall now covered by Hornet Nation!

Hornet Nation WiFi now in Roosevelt Hall!

The new Hornet Nation wireless has now been installed in Roosevelt Hall!  Connect to Hornet Nation using your ESU network credentials or to the guest network using Facebook!  For more information on when Hornet Nation is coming to your building and the current coverage map, go to sky.emporia.edu/wireless

 

Look for the Sign!

As we go-live with the new wireless in each building, look for the Hornet Nation digital sign in that building!

New Wireless Network Installed

Introducing the NEW wireless network - HORNET NATION!

Over the winter break, ESU IT has been busy installing a new and improved wireless network.  You will see this as "Hornet Nation" when you browse available networks from your device.  When you select "Hornet Nation", your device will automatically connect and your web browser will present you with a login to enter your ESU userid and password.  It's that simple--no special settings and it works with Windows, Mac OS, iOS and Android.

When:  The new system will roll out across campus over the Spring and Summer semesters and is expected to be fully in place by Fall 2017.

Now: Today, you can access Hornet Nation in Cora Miller Hall (Nursing) and William Allen White Library.

Next: The next locations scheduled for installation are Roosevelt Hall, Beach Hall, and King Hall.  All are expected to be completed in February.
