ESU IT goes to the Gala

ESU's Information Technology department joined the Hornet Nation at the Now & Forever campaign celebration event on Saturday, February 18.  In addition to providing a multitude of technology resources including TV's, computers, digital signage and video services, we were also excited for the opportunity to share several examples of bleeding edge technology.  Guests were able to experience a virtual world with our virtual reality setup, while others were able to see a creation come to life from one of our 3D printers.  IT didn't have the monopoly on technology as we also worked with other departments who showcased everything from large format interactive displays to a live-streamed lightboard demo!  We had a great time working with Sarah Eimer and her team at the Foundation and hope to be able to bring more experiences with technology to the ESU community in the future.

OneDrive as Disaster Recovery?

OneDrive is a great way to collaborate with friends or colleagues--but did you know it can also be an important component to your own personal disaster recovery plan?    Here's how:  OneDrive lets you work on local copies of your files and then sync them to the cloud in real time.  If something were to happen to your PC, for example, your hard drive crashes--everything is already backed up in the cloud right up to the moment of your last sync.  Once you get a new hard drive and install OneDrive, your files begin syncing back to your PC again.  No data loss at all!

ESU proves OneDrive for every current student, faculty and staff member.  Click here for more info:  https://sky2.emporia.edu/hornet365/Pages/OneDrive.aspx

Major Milestone! Office 365 Employee Email is Complete!

IT can announce that the bulk of the employee email migration to Office 365 is completed!  Over the past five months, IT has worked with every department across campus to migrate email from on-premises servers to those hosted in the cloud as part of our Hornet 365 initiative.  Over the next month, we'll be reaching out to departments who may have missed an account still left on the email servers.  Email is just one of many new services offered by Office 365.  We are currently encouraging students, faculty, and staff to take advantage of incredible features offered by OneDrive, the online file storage and collaboration service.  More features of Office 365 will be highlighted in the near future!

Technology in Action: New Kiosk in Career Services

Last week, IT worked with Career Services to design a new kiosk for students to sign-in by swiping their Hornet Card and making selections on a touch screen--no keyboard or mouse needed.  The kiosk itself is based on a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and a Heckler Design mount.  If anyone would like more information on this design, please contact the IT Help Desk.

IT Behind the Scenes: New System Dashboard Coming

ESU has approximately 200 different IT systems and monitoring them on a day-to-day basis can be a challenge.  This past year, we have been looking for a new tool to automate and proactively alert us in the event of a system outage or circumstances that could lead to an outage.  We have found that  in an open source solution called Icinga.  This new system will monitor core systems on campus (Banner, Active Directory) as well as those in the cloud (Office 365, Canvas, etc.).  In the future, we will also provide a public dashboard showing the status of services, which will allow users to see if a system is having any problems 24x7.  A unique feature of Icinga is that it is open source, meaning we don't have to pay a software company to use it and that we can modify how we use it to best suit our needs.  Stay tuned to the blog for more glimpses "behind the scenes" of IT and how they may benefit you!
