Privacy in a Snap

Snapchat recently announced new additions to their user privacy rights that their privacy lawyers, engineers, and designers created to improve Snapchat user's protection and to increase Snapchat's transparency to the public:

Length of Time Data is Retained
Exercising Data Rights

The amount of time Snapchat holds users' data vary depending on the circumstance, "Snapchat lets you capture what it’s like to live in the moment. On our end, that means most messages—like Snaps and Chats—sent in Snapchat will be automatically deleted by default from our servers after we detect they’ve been opened by all recipients or have expired. Other content, like Story posts, are stored for longer." We know that Snapchat chat messages and videos are deleted when viewing expires for the receiving viewer, however, if chats are saved or snaps are posted to story/saved in memory the content will be stored longer on Snapchat servers.

Snapchat users always have the chance to ask for additional information and request data that Snapchat has on their account. Things like Bitmoji, username, and payments are available in-app where as information like login history, Snap History, and Ranking are only accessible through download on Snapchat's site.

What students can do with this Knowledge
Having access to past information help college students to understand how they spend time on Snapchat. Knowing which pieces of data are collected and deleted gives students an idea of how their digital footprint is record... Or not. With this in mind students can make better choices in what/where they post content on Snapchat.
